Coaching Links

www.soccercoachinginternational.com - Very extensive site, includes a lively discussion forum, training exercises archive, articles, etc.

www.joesoccer.com - A good site for ideas on how to teach younger players. Drills are animated!

www.ucs.mun.ca/~dgrahm/manual/ - An excellent manual with all sorts of stuff: practice plans, basic philosophy of coaching, what should go in a first -aid kit, etc. Even though I've found I don't always agree with the plan that's laid out, this is still a top-notch resource.

www.bettersoccermorefun.com - A good introduction to the "Dutch vision" of soccer training, emphasizing 4v4 play. You could get started on and quite a ways into a 4v4-based training system using this site alone.

www.brucebrownlee.com - Good, practical advice on specific technical and tactical topics. Good discussion of the flat back four and how to teach it, as well as basic information on playing 4-4-2.

www.finesoccer.com - Offers articles with practice plans and ideas on specific topics, such as improving finishing on breakaways.

www.soccerhelp.com - I wouldn't endorse everything on this site (the "attacking plan", in particular), but there is some very worthwhile stuff, including a lot of good games for teaching fundamentals skills.

www.eteamz.com - A comprehensive sports site, the sections devoted to soccer include a discussion list and an archive of games and drills, including Jeff Pill's well known set of games and drills, "Pill's Drills." Eteamz also provides free and easy-to-use web pages for teams.

www.eteamz.com/mandansoccer/handouts/ - Bob Christensen's practice sessions for U6-U8, system of play for U11, and stretching routines for HS players.

www.eteamz.com/youthsoccercoach/ - George Lasher's material for coaching players U8 - HS, including a series of pass-and-move exercises.

FHSC Video Library

Tim Dayton (537-9008/532-2155:1711 Fairchild Ave.)

Jack Detchon, Zonal Defending. Good coverage of zonal defending compared to man-marking/sweeper systems, with useful exercises to work up from 1v1 defending all the way to a 4-back zonal system. Basic elements could be introduced at U10, more advanced elements probably worthwhile up to adults. Some good game footage. Comes with booklet.

Hubert Vogelsinger. These videos are all focused solely on technique, the demonstration of and instruction in technique.

Ball Control. Trapping and controlling the ball with various parts of the body.
Kicking. Striking the ball properly with the instep, inside of the foot, and outside of the foot.
Dribbling and Feinting. Use of the various surfaces of the foot, speed dribble, some of the most important feints. Good game footage.
Super Skills and Heading. Chipping, volleys, swerves, and attacking and defensive heading.

Dutch Soccer School, Defending. Disappointing. You get Dutch defending philosophy and a glimpse at some training exercises. Coaches U12 and up could probably grab a few ideas from this.

Ray Harford. Total defense. Not everything the title promises, but you get to see a good English coach running players through a defending practice. I've taken things away from this for use w/ U8's and you can probably keep raiding it up to adult level.
